Fine needle aspiration biopsy

When a medical specialist finds a node on thyroid suspicious, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland with cytological analysis should be made. It provides information if there is chronic thyroid inflammation, and what is the nature of the node (benign or malignant).
It is a precise procedure during which the doctor performs the fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid under ultrasound guidance to ensure accurate placement of the needle. A part of suspicious tissue is taken further to cytological analysis. The cytological analysis indicates whether it concerns normal, inflammatory or tumor cells.
